But, not everyone who settles in EC gets flaming pink hair, nor are we all engaged in “intense” activities like building rollercoasters and fire-spinning. As proof, I can assure you that I am definitely not hardc0r3, nor even an average builder. And yet I’ve been happy on the East Side for three years. That said, East Campus is not a dorm for everyone, but neither is any dorm at MIT. People can be miserable in, say, Next House just as much as in EC. It’s perhaps my favorite aspect of the Instituteâ€"the chance to grow in a tight community that fits you. For this post on East Campus pros and cons, I asked fellow residents for help. We fix stuff, and we break stuff. We build stuff as a dorm, halls build stuff together, people build lofts in their rooms every year and many people have their own projects from artwork to 3D printers. We talk about physics at parties, or we use the dance floor we built as a hall together. We climb together, we play video games together, we talk about politics together, spin fire together, and do all sorts of other cool stuff together. Great location, close to everything. There are murals on the walls! You can paint on your own walls and customize your room in almost any way you like. East Campus is mostly single rooms. East Campus has a lot of culture. I mean a lot of culture. Each hall has its own, and the dorm is the umbrella to each of those cultures. People really care about the culture, in part because it draws a lot of interesting people there and encourages open discussion … and in part because it defines them and they like it. Cons: The FOMO (fear of missing out) is beyond real. Because people are doing interesting stuff all the time, for a while it feels like you are always missing out on stuff. Of course, in reality, you are missing out on mostly sleep, or focus on school work, extracurriculars, and personal well-being. But this is something that you learn to deal with in any dorm, and also what PNR [Pass/No Record] is for. Since everyone is always doing cool stuff, impostor syndrome is fairly likely to cross your mind in East Campus if you didnt come here with three patents and a business in the works. Not to worry, this is probably something you would deal with in most dorms. Whats nice about EC is that, if for some reason you feel this way , someone is probably willing to teach it to you. Lets put it this way: far from the nicest facilities on campus. Your parents probably wont like it, unless you have extra-cool parents. Pros/Cons (could be be either): The nearest food is either in Kendall Square [5 mins away] or the Stud [Student Center]. EC is cook-for-yourself. This is great for eating on a budget, dealing with allergies, or learning how to cook good food. It is a little annoying if you just want to grab food quickly. East Campus is the dorm that never sleeps. I cant think of a single time where everyone on hall is asleep during the semester . Great for an exciting lifestyle, not so great for a sense of sanity. If I wanted to spend all day flopped on a giant foof reading a book, I could do that too without any judgement. People are very accepting and supportive of who you are, leading to an overwhelming sense of community I havent found elsewhere. Cons: When I tell my friends I live in EC, most of them say, Wow I didnt think you were the East Campus type, to which I respond, Well, whats the East Campus type?' and they say, idk not you, which is always a bit off-putting, probably because I was your stereotypical math-loving Asian girl in high school. On the other hand, some people respond with some version of, Wow you must be really hardk0r3! and Im also slightly confused because I never thought of myself as particularly hardk0r3 or aggressive. Jacob M. ‘20: Im just going to list a bunch of possibly silly things I like about EC: There are [7] doors … I like the multitude of doors because EC is my home, and I shouldnt have to walk past a security checkpoint to get home when we have the modern tech known as RFID cards and dock locks. I woke up at 8:55am and got to my 9am class. The food truck will sometimes park right next door. My work is a 10-minute walk away. I dont feel like Im living on someone elses property ¡I feel like Im living on my own property! There are strong bonds between my floor mates that I feel go beyond casual friendship and into something closer to altruism between family members. The courtyard [between East and West parallels] is really cool. 30-something steps to the nearest door in building 66 in case its miserable outside. There are a ton of opportunities (Rush, CPW, Bad Ideas, etc.) to be a part of group art or construction projects, or to get money, support, and feedback for your own project. + We have a sense of ownership over both the building and the culture. You get total control over what your room looks like. You also get a tremendous amount of influence on what the community around you is like. + Everyone here is strange, and so you feel so much more comfortable being your own strange self around them. + East Campus is its own cultural bubble you can leave the real world far behind. + People are up at all hours; if youre bored, theres always someone to do something dumb with. See the i3 videos for examples. + Theres a general feeling of empowerment we can do what we want tempered by the feeling of responsibility that its up to us to clean up our own messes. + No dining plan means you pick the way you want to live and you dont get charged through the nose for it. Cons of living in EC: + People tend to put all the cool things theyre doing on display and exaggerate them there can be a feeling that youll never be hardk0r3 enough. + If youre a person whos afraid of missing out, youre going to have a hard time, because theres so much going on and you cant be a part of all of it. + People tend to not get enough sleep, and although its definitely possible to sleep a lot, you have to make yourself get to bed. + East Campus is its own cultural bubble it can be easy to get caught up in whatever role youve taken on locally, and hard to remember who you are and all the things you can do outside of EC or MIT. + The building isnt clean and has a generally grungy vibe the laundry room sometimes floods, and theres the occasional roach or mouse. + Everyone here is strange. Maybe you dont want to live with a bunch of weirdos. Nicholas P. ‘19:   Pros:  Its a center of alternative culture … [where] no one cares what youre doing unless it inflicts on other people … EC can be more outwardly open about their alternative culture, which in turn allows for people to feel like they can be more alternative … Example: I had green dyed hair for a while; I dont think i wouldve done that if I wasnt living in EC. EC residents, in my experience, dont peer pressure other residents into trying to fit into this overall alternative culture. Con: It is close to classes, [which] makes you feel like youre part of the MIT bubble even more than in a dorm like Next House. [Follow-up] I definitely see EC as a very socially liberal place with a big emphasis on not caring if youre straight, gay, a stoner, a straightedge, a vegetarian, a carnivore, etc., as well as not forcing lifestyles that fit into this sphere (Example: Im a vegetarian; have many friends who choose to eat meat but I never force my vegetarian lifestyle onto them, and they dont force their carnivore lifestyle onto me). Maya K. 19: Some important take-aways in pros (from bonus survey): ~1/3 of the people who took the survey see academic buildings as an extension of home; that rises to ~1/2 at East Campus. Almost 60% of residents say that East Campus/their hall is their first home. Others pros: Cats, murals, etc are big. [Residents doors are always open.] Cruft are AMAZING: find someone from East Campus, and no matter how old they are, they will welcome you and want to hear stories. My personal favorite (although I sometimes question how true it is): We dont care what you do, as long as you dont harm yourself or someone else. Crazy stuff happens all the time. Hardcore (not the one with the k0 and 3; that one is dangerous and stupid) Hardk0r3 stories (just dont fuck up yourself!) People pushing you to be better. Cons: Its intense. [editors note: this does depend on floor/friend group] Its not good if you plan on sleeping. Studying can be hard if you have a hard time saying no. [Oh man, Im a fuckup can become practically a greeting, It can be a little mentally draining.] If youre not around, youre going to miss something because of how impromptu everything is. You [personally] can have nice things. But, as a dorm, we dont have nice things. The most important things to understand about tradeoffs:  The freedom we have comes in a large part because East Campus is not a Nice Place: we can paint our walls, wreck our rooms, and have cats because the dorm is a mess. A lot of the freedom here is also [because of the mentality] that freedom trumps manners. [Dont be a dick is a rule, but its not always followed (e.g. see ec-discuss).] [editors note: credit for because EC is home 400ever tagline also goes to Maya K. 19] Thomas S. ‘19: Pros: -truly have the freedom to be who you want and pursue whatever activity you enjoy -yet, also not pressured to partake in anything you do not wish to -can modify rooms in many ways -very close to class, MIT Medical, the T [Kendall Square subway/bus stop, 5 mins away], and convenient in general -no meal plan -mostly singles (these last two could either be pros or cons depending on preference) Cons: -old facilities [Follow-up] For ropes, I would include that EC, as compared to other MIT dorms, has many people interested in and passionate about climbing, canyoning, caving, rappelling, and playing with ropes. If a 2021 is interested in these activities, either as someone already familiar or someone who wants to learn, then EC definitely has a community for them. ___________________ Conclusion: You’ll know if you fit in East Campus (or not). Visit us during REX, talk to people, see different halls. Don’t be put off by giant construction projects in the courtyard led by people with rainbow hair and no shoes. You will find people with a variety of interests, just as anywhere at MIT. Give EC a chance during REX and don’t fear to put it as your first choice in the Housing Lottery (which closes today!). Note to parents: EC (and Random Hall) are significantly cheaper than other dorms, especially compared to dorms with dining halls. A cook-for-yourself lifestyle is cheaper, healthier, more convenient, and saves time, even for people who cant cook (like me, see here). The building is old, but not a hazard, and, by design, is virtually indestructible by fires and natural disasters. Residents follow safe construction/fire-spinning/etc practices (EHS-approved). Newton vs Einstein - Free Essay Example

A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true, for if the things be false, the apprehension of them is not understanding. -Sir Isaac Newton. In the early 1680s Newton published his theory on gravity. Newtons theory proclaimed that gravity was basically a predictable force acting on all matter in the universe. Also that the gravity was related to both the distance and the mass. To summarize it, he thought that the farther away something was/ the less mass it had the less force there would be acting upon the object from gravity. However, later on in the year 1915, Einstein proposed a new theory about gravity that was a little different then Newtons theory. He thought that in space gigantic objects were responsible for distortions in the so called fabric of space and time. Unlike Newton, Einstein did not refer to gravity as a force during his studies, instead deciding to refer to it as the fourth dimension. One way to simulate Einsteins theory on this fabric of space and time is to use a sheet hung up on a base made of pipes so it appears to look like a table. You can then but an assortment of different weights and objects on the cloth to see how they affect the so called fabric of space. Surprisingly, their discoveries also had lots of similarities. For example, in physics it is said that two objects that travel in a straight line parallel of each other should obviously stay in that line and never meet each other. With the theory that Newton proposed it said that due to the gravity involved that small particles from the object would break off and collide with each other because the force attracting the particles and pulling them towards a commonly shared third particle or object. Although Einstein did not describe it quite like this, he did agree with Newton about it. The only difference was that Einstein did not simply thing of gravity as a force but more as a fourth dimension or even a curve in space and time.

Desire: Nature’s Forbidden Fruit Desire is a powerful force that shapes the choices and actions people make every day. It is a concept that humanity is infatuated with, a puzzle to be deciphered on whether it is a truly good force or something that will only lead to a person’s own self destruction. Both the Bhagavad-Gita and Genesis, cornerstones of literature with their fascinating views of humanity, warn that the path down desire is a crooked one that will only lead to misery. The shrewd wisdom these books are infused with is how desire will lead to one’s downfall and ultimately leave a person feeling unfulfilled after having a bite. It may be nature’s forbidden fruit, but it is so for a sane reason. The Gita is a book of things one must do in order to live a prosperous and righteous life as dictated by Krishna. Factors Influencing the Prevelence of Addiction Essay

Addiction Everyday we see and hear news articles and reviews that say: â€Å"I cannot put down Twilight†¦ it’s addicting!† or â€Å"I’m a Breaking Bad addict!† The way the term addiction is used in the media these days, many would overlook its actual significance and the trouble it causes for millions across the globe. Recently, many individuals have referred to addiction as anything that is a compulsive need or habit-forming, which could involve everything from substances, like nicotine or alcohol, to activities such as reading a compelling book or getting hooked on a popular television series. Unfortunately, the word has become overused, over diagnosed, and even used as an excuse for one’s wrong behavior. Needless to say, addiction is, and†¦show more content†¦The article’s authors counter the â€Å"Choice Model,† explaining that a person cannot choose whether to be addicted or not. They outline the path leading to addiction by emphasizing the cause as a physical malfunction in the reward circuitry of the brain. They claim that an addict’s abnormalities in his or her reward system causes the addict to achieve the state of euphoria or â€Å"high† by ingesting substances or addictive behaviors. In addition, one’s compulsive behaviors and substance abuse can hurt the reward system and result in â€Å"impaired impulse control and addiction† (Matesa and Bickman), so it is a deleterious cycle. Lastly, the article espouses that the â€Å"Choice Model† is in some way blaming the individual and is a â€Å"setup for relapse† (Matesa and Bickman). Viewing addiction as a disease, the ASAM says, will make it easier for addicts to receive help and conquer addiction. Proponents of the â€Å"Choice Model† disagree, explaining that viewing addiction as a disease is more of a self-fulfilling prophecy than a way to draw help. Alternatively, the â€Å"Choice Model† counters the belief that addiction is a disease, but rather believes it is all a choice when using substances or taking part in compulsive behaviors. The reasons for the â€Å"revolving door† phenomenon are different for women; therefore, their treatment should be more gender focused and specific to their needs. Judging by the rates at which women recidivate, you could assume that somewhere along the way the system has failed them. What role does drug use, motherhood, mental health, physical, sexual, and mental abuse play in the recidivism of female inmates? According to Stuart and Brice-Baker (2004), drugs have been one of the major culprits leading to incarceration and repeat criminal offenses among women in recent years. Drug offenses have the largest increase of any crime committed by female offenders. 1. According to Rosenblatt (2014), a SDLC, system development life cycle, describes how to plan and manage systems development and the activities and functions of systems developers will perform. The waterfall model is divided in five steps and the result of each one is a deliverable to the next step. The first step is called Systems Planning and starts when the IT department does a systems request. This phase is responsible for doing a preliminary investigation to know the situation and evaluate the necessity of this new system. The principal part of this investigation is called feasibility study and it is responsible for showing anticipated reviews of the costs, benefits and course of action. The second step is called Systems Analysis and it purpose is to build a document with the system requirements, showing details as management and user requirements, benefits, development strategies and costs. The third step is the System Design, happens when is necessary to create a physical model and identify the processes (inputs and outputs), satisfying the requirements. Its deliverable is the systems design specification. The fourth step is the System Implementation and during this phase, the new system is constructed. Even though the British army was larger, the American army proved to have talented fighters. The Continental Army and the state militias were essentially the two military organizations of the Americans. Throughout the war, the Americans employed only 231,771 men, which meant that the American forces rarely numbered over 20,000. Compared to the British, the American army was small, but their military tactics and skills were excellent. From a distance of 200 yards, an American rifleman could easily kill a British soldier. Many men observed that the British plainly fired in the general direction of the Americans, while the Americans aimed for the heads of the British. Also, the Americans had many more competent and talented leaders. George Washington and Benedict Arnold were two of the most brilliant American leaders. During this time period, the British firing techniques were not effective. The commanders lined up their troops in lines, one line in front of the other. Then, the British soldiers fired, knelt down, and then reloaded their weapons. While the British were standing in the open, the Americans used guerrilla tactics and fired upon the British while using the trees as protection. When the British retreated, they marched in a single file line. Brilliantly, the Americans ran ahead of the retreating British and picked them off with their rifles. Almost defenseless to this American technique, the British lost many soldiers. The British hired German mercenaries, Hessians, which proved to be an unreliable source of troops. Overall, the British did not win the war because the Americans knew how to fight effectively with their limited troops. With some foreign aid from France, the Americans found that they held an advantage in supplies. At one point in time, the Americans were using 90% provided French gunpowder. Also, the French provided a strong navy which protected the American coastline. France fought against the British because they wanted revenge, and they also wanted to reclaim some territory that they had lost in the Seven Years War. Fortunately, the Americans were supplied with French money, armies, and supplies, so I would have predicted an American win. One of the greater advantages that the Americans held was that the British underestimated them. Even before the war began, an anonymous British officer bragged that the Americans could be beaten by an experienced sheep herder. This remark clearly shows that the British thought that the Americans were weak. In fact, the confident British did not push to accelerate the war in 1775 and 1776. The Americans won the war because Lord Howe, a British leader, and his troops did not fight to destroy, but rather fought to control. If Howe would have fought to destroy, the Americans could not have fought back. England did not win the war because they were unprepared and over confident. In my mind, the Americans cherished a moral advantage that came from their belief in seeking freedom. Even in defeat, the Americans optimistically looked forward to the next battle and planned their strategy. Many Americans held the idea that they were going to fight until they won independence, or they would die fighting. This tenacious confidence proved to be the most effective fighting technique of the Americans. On the other hand, the British held the attitude that they were only keeping a bunch of weak farmers under control. Rauf Khattak ABSTRACT The Radioactive Iodine is widely used for the treatment of various thyroid disorders. The patients  undergoing such treatments are advised to restrict their social and work related activities to limit  radiation exposures to others. The present work describes the results of a structured survey  conducted on patients visiting Institute of Radiotherapy and nuclear Medicine (IRNUM), Peshawar,  for the thyrotoxicosis treatment. The patients were asked about their housing conditions, family set  up, number of kids, travelling mode and time back home from the hospital. The radiation doses to the  other people with whom they might come in contact in their living environment were estimated. The  radiation doses to others at one meter from the patients were calculated as 0.76, 1.53, 2.29, 3.06, 3.82  and 4.58mSv. The results of the survey indicate that the radiation protection advice and other  regulatory requirements need to be reviewed keeping in view individual patientâ⠂¬â„¢s circumstances. INTRODUCTION The radioactive iodine (RAI) is widely used for the treatment of various thyroid disorders  since long. The differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is treated by admitting the patients in  hospital where as hyperthyroidism patients are treated on out patient basis in most of the  countries (1-4). The safety issues for the patients, their families, comforters, hospital staff and  the general public arise with either treatment approach. The radiation hazards are more in  case of hyperthyroidism treatment than the DTC treatment due to shorter effective half life  of the 131I in the later application. Therefore at the time of release of the patient from  medical confinement, the retained radioactivity in DTC patients is much lower causing low  risk of radiation exposure to other people. In case of thyrotoxicosis treatment the  administered radioactivity is much lower as compared to DTC treatment but radiation  doses to others are more due to high uptake of RAI by these pa tients (5-8). The patients  undergoing such treatments are advised to restrict their social and work related activities  to reduce radiation exposure to others when they return to their families in community (9-16). This radiation protection advice is usually based on residual activity or radiation exposure level and is not specific to an individual patient circumstances or socioeconomic  condition. These advices are usually formulated by the developed countries and are  adopted as such in most of the developing countries. In actual practice the compliance to the  protection advice depends on socioeconomic conditions and the life style of the patients. Therefore keeping in view this aspect of RAI treatments, an interview based structured  survey was conducted on patients visiting our hospital for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis. The patients were asked about their housing conditions, family/home set up, number of  kids, mode of travelling and travelling time to back home from the hospital. The radiation  doses to the other people with whom they might come in contact in their living  environment MATERIAL AND METHODS The patients were asked about their housing conditions, family set up, number of kids and  travelling periods back home. The total number of patients inducted in the present survey  was 419. The data collected was tabulated and reviewed for completeness. A calibrated  dose of 131I (185-1106MBq) was administered to the patients. The exposure rate from the  patient was measured at a distance of one meter from standing position with a hand-held  pressurized battery operated ÃŽ ² ÃŽ ³ survey meter, Victoreen Model 450P, calibrated from  secondary standard dosemetry laboratory, Islamabad. The dose rate was recorded in units  of ÃŽ ¼Svhr-1. The patients were instructed to sleep alone, drink fluids liberally and avoid prolonged close personal contact with others for the first 2 days. The patients and familymembers were told that they could resume normal activities thereafter (9-12). The estimated  radiation doses to the maximally exposed person were calculated using the form ula given in  equation 2 (14). RESULTS There were 385 (93%) patients residing in joint and 29 (07%) in separate family system  Table 1. It was found that 15.27 % of the patients were male and 84.73% females with age  wise distribution as shown in Table 2. The measured hospital leaving dose rate at one meter from the patients were 5.7, 11.0, 15.7,  18.7, 23.0 and 28.0ÃŽ ¼Svh-1 for administered RAI activity of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 29.9mCi  respectively. The corresponding radiation doses to others from exposure to the patient at  one meter using occupancy factor of 0.25 were calculated as 0.76, 1.53, 2029, 3.06, 3.82 and  4.58mSv Table 3. They survey showed that 4.77, 17.66, 22.91, 24.10, 12.66 and 17.90% patients had  accommodation consisting of one, two, three, four, five and more than five rooms  respectively Table 4. It was observed that 78.04% patients used public transport and 21.96% used private  transport for back home after RAI administration. The radiation doses to others during  travelling were estimated using occupancy factor of 0.1m and 1m distance plotted versus  travelling time of the patient from hospital to back home Figure 1 and Figure 2 respectively.   It was also observed that 1.67% of the patients had no sanitary arrangements at home and  they used open space in the fields as toilet. The patients residing in localities where there is  comparatively better sanitation arrangements had one (31.74%), two (36.04%), three  (17.42%) and more than three (13.13%) toilets available Table 5. In addition 11.93% of the patients had no kids where 10.74% lived in joint family system  and 1.19% as separate. The survey showed that 88.7% of the patients had kids and 82.33%  of these lived in joint family system where as 5.73% lived separate. The number of kids and  the family status showed that 17.18%, 31.50% and 33.65% patients had 1-3, 4-6 and more  than 6 kids respectively lived in joint family system while 2.86%, 1.91% and 0.95% patients  had 1-3, 4-6 and more than 6 kids respectively and they used to live in separate family  system Table 6. DISCUSSION The patients treated for thyrotoxicosis with RAI (131I) are advised certain restrictions on  behavior in order to ensure the radiation safety of all other individuals with whom they may  come into contact. Generally it is assumed that the patients are unlikely to create a hazard  to other persons. A dose limit of 5mSv and 1mSv had been recommended for these peoples  depending upon the nature and type of their interaction with the patient (17). The  compliance to the safety instructions depend upon patient’s literacy level, decision making  capacity, health education, grasping and understanding disclosure of treatment in general  and patient’s socioeconomic conditions and life styles in particular(18,19). The over all literacy level of the survey region is 37.26 % (20). Literacy level reflects the  ability of the patients to comprehend that they emit detectable levels of radiation for  specified period of time after their treatment which are hazardous for other peoples. It was  observed that 93% of the patients inducted in the survey used to reside in joint family  system and 07% lived in separate system Table 1. This aspect coupled with the low literacy  level puts emphasis on the patients receiving treatments to comply with the instructions  strictly to limit radiation exposure to others. The restriction on mode of travelling back to home is important factor in RAI treatment  especially when 78.96% of the patients used public transport to back home from hospital. It  is practically difficult to measure radiation doses to other passengers traveling in the same  vehicle. The measured hospital leaving dose rate at one meter from the patients suggest  that the time restrictions to travel by private transport (at 1m distance) are not required,  although they should not sit immediately adjacent to another passenger, accompanying  person or driver Table 3. Similarly restrictions would not be required for public transport (0.1m distance) for one  hour journey. It was observed that radiation doses to others at 1m and 0.1m with  administered 131I radioactivity of 185, 555 and 1106MBq increases linearly with the travelling time Figure 1 2. The patients needing greater travelling time back home should  use private transport after RAI administration. Therefore regulatory authorities need to  reassess the situation with respect to private or public mode of travelling while  recommending discharge limits for RAI treatments. The radiation doses from the exposure  to the patient to total decay (t=∞) at one meter using occupancy factor of 0.25 for RAI  administered were well within recommended dose limit of 5mSv for adult comforters Table  3. However for patients residing in single room accommodation, with kids and joint family  system, the dose limit of 1mSv is unlikely to be adhered. This aspect becomes more  important where a very large percentage of the patients (88.07%) had kids and 82.33% of  those used to live in joint family system as observed in the present survey Table 6. The  sanitary conditions of the patients at home are important to protect family members from  radioactive contamination and associated external radiation exposure. It was observed that  patients having better sanitation arrangements would not pose radiation related problems. However patients having no proper sanitation (1.67%) are source of concern for the  communities where they reside Table 5. The trends observed indicate that the patients with single room accommodation, having  kids and joint family system need strict compliance to radiation protection advice to restrict  radiation doses to the immediate family members. Therefore RAI treatments need to be  carried out keeping in view patient’s living conditions and life styles. CONCLUSION The radiation protection advice and regulatory requirements need to be formulated  keeping in view patient’s socioeconomic, life style and living conditions. It needs to be  reviewed depending upon individual patient’s circumstances.
